When the steering wheel is rotated, the front wheels pivot on the steering knuckles, which are connected to the steering rack at each end by tie rods. The tie rod includes two threaded portions that may be changed in length to align the front wheels. The tie rod end, which is the exterior piece, is most prone to wear and failure. Although traditionally tie rod ends needed to be lubricated often, they are now just one of many parts of a contemporary car's chassis that don't require any care. However, when they malfunction, they may affect the alignment of the vehicle, hasten tyre wear, or, in the worst scenarios, separate and result in a loss of control.
