The trunk or luggage area is usually located in the back of the car. Early designs included an outside rack on the back of the vehicle to which a luggage trunk could be attached. [1] Later designs incorporated the storage space into the vehicle's body, making it more streamlined. [2] [3] The main storage compartment is often positioned at the end of the vehicle opposite the engine.

Some mid-engined or electric vehicles have luggage spaces in both the front and rear.

[4] Some examples are the Porsche 914 and Boxster, as well as the Toyota MR2. The Fiat X1/9 features two storage compartments as well, however the rear one is modest, easily accessible, and nearly cuboid in shape. [5]
