Brake Drums

Set inside the drums are brake shoes with brake linings (a friction substance) that push on the drums from the inside to provide braking force (decelerate and stop).

By forcing the brake linings against the interior surfaces of the drums, friction is produced in this arrangement. Kinetic energy is transformed into thermal energy by this friction. In compared to disc brakes, drum rotation increases the force with which the shoes and lining are pressed against the drum. On the other hand, it is crucial to design the parts such that the thermal energy's heat is effectively released into the atmosphere.
