Exhaust Gaskets

Gaskets for exhaust manifolds may be constructed from embossed steel, occasionally in numerous layers. Graphite, ceramic composites, high-temperature fibre materials, and others may also be used to make these gaskets. Different materials are combined in certain gaskets. At different connection locations in the exhaust system, flange gaskets and ring gaskets are two more types of exhaust gaskets. The materials used to make these gaskets are often the same as those used to make exhaust manifold gaskets.

The exhaust manifold is sealed to the cylinder head by an exhaust manifold gasket. Because there are two exhaust manifolds on V6 and V8 engines, two manifold gaskets are necessary. The joint between the exhaust manifold and cylinder head is sealed by an exhaust manifold gasket. This guarantees that all exhaust gas will pass through the catalytic converter for treatment and stops exhaust from leaking out of the connection. Other connections in the exhaust system, such those between the exhaust pipe and exhaust manifold, are sealed by flange and ring gaskets.
