Resonators

Although resonators and mufflers function similarly, they serve different purposes. A resonator is essentially a muffler made to dampen sound exclusively in a specific frequency range as opposed to lowering sound levels generally. Comparing your exhaust system to an audio system, imagine the resonator as a graphic equaliser and the primary muffler as a volume control.
