Valve Guides
The spring, retainer, seal, and valve rotator round out the valve assembly (fig. 3-53). For all engines, the valve's spring, which maintains its generally closed state, is essentially the same; however, coil kinds and numbers may differ. The majority of valves simply contain one spring, but occasionally there may be two—an inner and an outer spring. The pressure keeping the valve closed is increased by the second spring. Valve float may be caused by low spring tension (spring too weak to close the valve at high rpm).
The valve spring is secured to the valve by a valve retainer and keepers. The retainer is a washer with a unique form that fits over the valve spring. The locks, or keepers, fit.
